Body found on walking track
Police are seeking the public's help in identifying the person whose body was found on a Coromandel walking track near Tairua today.
Sergeant Damien O'Kane of the Tairua Police says the body of the man was airlifted by helicopter to Tairua this afternoon after being found by walkers on Collins Track in the Puketui Valley around midday.
There is nothing initially suspicious about the man's death but police don't know who he is.
The man didn't have any identification on him nor do police have any reports of any missing persons.
The tramper is described as a white male wearing a dark blue and grey T-shirt, blue shorts, black boots and a backpack.
"The track goes up to a popular lookout," O'Kane said. "At this stage the priority is identifying who the man is and getting in touch with his next of kin.
"We're appealing for anyone who may have a friend or relative unaccounted for to make contact with Police."
It's too early to speculate on how the man died, O'Kane said. He added that the discovery highlighted the need for people to let others know when and where they are going into the outdoors and when they are due out.
