A man has been arrested and charged over the sexually motivated attack on a six-year-old girl in West Auckland last week.
Three children were playing at Glendene Reserve on Glendene Avenue on New Years Day when they were approached by a man who spoke briefly to them, before grabbing the 6-year-old.
"At that time he's taken her down towards a creek area and assaulted her in what I believe is a sexually motivated assault," said Detective Sergeant Peter Litherland on Thursday.
The 20-year-old West Auckland man has been charged with kidnapping and assault with intent to commit sexual violation.
During the attack the girl's mother heard her screams and ran to her, causing the man to run off.
While the girl escaped with minor injuries and some scratch marks, the incident was "traumatic", Litherland said.
"This was every parent's worst nightmare," he said.
The man fled into a nearby reserve leaving behind a pair of jandals.
The police thanked the public and the media for their help in apprehending the man.
"Because the incident is now before the courts we're limited as to what we can say, but I can tell you that the family of the victim were very relieved to hear this news," said Litherland.
The accused will appear in the Waitakere District Court tomorrow.
