A motorcyclist killed in the Waikato at the weekend has been named as Chinese national Shixun Jiang, 24, who had been living in Auckland.
Jiang had been travelling as part of a group of motorcyclists who were returning from a tour of the South Island when the crash happened on State Highway 1B Gordonton Rd at Taupiri about 9.30pm, police said today.
District prevention manager, Inspector Rob Lindsay, said the crash was still under investigation by the Waikato serious crash unit, but initial indications were the group had crossed Cook Strait earlier in the day and were heading north back to Auckland when the crash happened.
"It appears members of the group riding ahead of Mr Jiang have passed a northbound car but as he has gone to follow suit he has collided with an oncoming Hyundai 4x4 in the southbound lane," Lindsay said.
He extended police sympathy to Jiang's family and hoped the tragedy would be a reminder to all road users of the need to watch their speed and take plenty of breaks on long journeys.
