Police have found the body of the 19-year-old male who went missing while swimming in the Ruamahanga River in Wairarapa yesterday evening.

Jesse Barber's body was removed about 1.30pm today from the riverside reserve where the search was being co-ordinated by police, and was identified by family members.

A police officer at the scene said the man was swimming with a group of locals who were familiar with swimming in the area, known as the double bridges swimming hole.

The river was running high and dirty due to rain in the Tararua Forest Park, and Barber went under in a "deep turbulent pool" about 6pm yesterday.

His friends were unable to find him.

Police and friends and family searched the river today using a helicopter, jet boat and a dive squad.

His family has requested privacy.
