A car has been reportedly shot at in the Lower Hutt suburb of Naenae this afternoon.

The car was driving along Chapman Cres about 12.30pm when the driver heard the sound of a gun, Inspector Marty Parker said.

It was later discovered the car had what appeared to be a bullet hole in it.

It was believed some children had been playing with a gun.

Police were at an address in Naenae talking to the alleged shooters.
