Plane crash at Tauranga airport
A light plane has crashed at Tauranga Airport shortly after taking off.
The plane crashed on the airport's grass strip around 2.45pm, a Northern Fire communications spokesperson said.
The pilot was the only person on board and was not injured.
The crash may have been caused by engine trouble as the aircraft was taking off, Tauranga Airport manager Ray Dumble told SunLive.
He heard a change in the sound of the engine before the plane landed heavily. Its landing gear collapsed.
Firefighters from Tauranga and Mount Maunganui were called but were not required.
St John Ambulance was also attended.
