An 8-year-old girl has been flown to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a falling tree branch while tramping.
Emergency services were called to Rimutaka Forest Park about 10am today to help the Wellington girl after she was struck on the head by the branch.
The girl had been tramping in the Goat Hut area of the Orongorongo River with family when she was hurt.
She was in a stable condition when she was airlifted to Wellington with suspected concussion, Palmerston North rescue helicopter pilot Chris Moody said.
High winds in the area this morning could have contributed to the injury, he said.
Her family had been able to move her to meet the helicopter and their "good communications and accurate navigation" had helped the rescue go smoothly, Moody said.
Earlier today a "rogue gust" of wind had hit the Rimutaka Hill at almost 140kmh.
At 7am, there were still 120kmh gusts measured in the area.
