One person has been killed and two others seriously injured after a three-car crash south of Auckland this afternoon.

The crash happened in Karaka Rd (State Highway 22) just east of Whangapouri Rd and near the township of Karaka about 3.25pm.

A police communications spokesman said witnesses at the scene said three cars were involved, two of which had collided head-on. At least two people were understood to be trapped in the vehicles.

Of the two injured people one was listed as status one with "grave concerns for their survival", the other had moderate injuries.

Eastbound traffic was being diverted to Blackbridge Rd and across the Hingaia Bridge to the motorway interchange.

Westbound traffic was being diverted to Great South Rd. Motorists were asked to avoid the area.
