An arsonist is believed to have set a fire at Auckland's historic St Mary's Church in Parnell early today.

A neighbour noticed the fire about 4am and called the Fire Service.

An accelerant is thought to have been used.

Church spokesman Jayson Rhodes said the building would be closed for at least a day because of minor external damage.

"We've got quite a bit of cleaning up to do and the smell of smoke to get out of here."

He said a quick response from emergency services ensured there was not major damage.

Fire officers are investigating.
