Firefighters tonight battled a scrub fire which threatened homes on Kaiti Hill in Gisborne.
The alarm was raised about 6.45pm, a Gisborne police spokeswoman said.
Smoke had been visible all over the city, she said.
While the fire was now under control, houses in three streets were evacuated as a precaution and some properties had been threatened.
Four helicopters were also called in to fight the fire, which was near a beach.
The cause of the fire was not yet known.
