A 72-year-old man is to face a charge over a lawnmowing incident that killed a 4-year-old Hastings boy.

Uetaha Dahtanian Ransfield-Wanoa, of Camberley, died in the incident at Kirkpatrick Park in Hastings on October 8 last year.

The boy had been playing at the park with his cousins when he went under the tractor-pulled mower which was pulled by a tractor as it cut grass.

The accident was witnessed by the victim's 8-year-old uncle and other children who ran to get help.

Police said the man would face one charge of reckless driving causing death and had been summoned to appear in the Hastings District Court next month. He was seeking name suppression.

Hastings District Council and WorkSafe NZ were investigating the incident.

Uetaha's family described him as "a bubbly, cheeky 4-year-old" with "a mischievous grin who was loved by everyone".

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
