A 13-year-old girl has died after a boat capsized near Surat Bay in the Catlins today.
The girl was onboard with her father, a 48-year-old Balclutha man, and a 13-year-old male friend.
Police understood the boat's engine cut out about 300 metres from shore, and the boat was swamped before capsizing in windy and rough conditions.
Balclutha police and the Dunedin rescue helicopter were called about 1.30pm.
Her father and friend made it back to shore, and the girl was found on shore about half an hour later, police said. She was unable to be resuscitated.
All three were all wearing lifejackets.
