A Swiss woman has been rescued after being hit by a "monster" boulder on Mt Ngauruhoe this morning.

Taupo's Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was called to the upper slopes of the mountain to help the 27-year-old Swiss woman.

She was heading down the mountain when a climber above her dislodged a boulder which came "careering" toward her, pilot Nat Every said.

A witness described the boulder as a monster.

The woman ducked to avoid being hit full-on by the rock, but was injured protecting herself.

She had a badly broken arm and a cut to her head.

A long-line recovery system was used to winch her to safety from the steep slope.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
