The death of Wellington woman Lynn Howie in Libya has been referred to New Zealand's chief coroner.

Howie, 46, and British-born Mark De Salis, 48, were shot as they picnicked together on a beach near the city of Sabratha this month.

It was normal procedure to refer a death to the chief coroner when a body was repatriated from overseas, a Ministry of Justice spokesman said.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) spokesman said no arrests had yet been made.

Howie will be farewelled at a private funeral next week.
