Woman drowns near Nelson

Police have named the woman who drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island near Nelson yesterday evening.

She was Adelheid Wilma Stock, aged 71, of Nelson.

Ms Stock was pulled unconscious from the water at around 5pm. She had been swimming with a friend, Nelson police said.

Members of the public and emergency services, including crew from the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Ms Stock.

Police thanked members of the public on the island who pulled her from the water and administered CPR.

Her death had been referred to the coroner.
