Police have named the woman who drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island near Nelson yesterday.

She was Adelheid Wilma Stock, 71, of Nelson.

Stock was pulled unconscious from the water about 5pm. She had been swimming with a friend, Nelson police said.

Members of the public and emergency services, including crew from the Nelson Marlborough rescue helicopter, tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate Stock.

Police thanked members of the public on the island who pulled her from the water and administered CPR.
Her death has been referred to the coroner.
