Children playing with matches are thought to have started a fire that destroyed a South Auckland house today.
Manukau police said they were assisting the Fire Service at a house fire in Otahuhu.
The fire began about 1pm on Clements St and destroyed the house.
"Four young children and one adult have been accounted for, with no serious injuries," police said.
"Preliminary investigation of the scene suggests that the fire started as a result of children playing with matches inside the house."
Police said the five people were lucky to have escaped the fire.
"The incident highlights the importance of ensuring matches and lighters are always kept out of reach of children.
"Police ask that homeowners take the opportunity to ensure smoke detectors are working and are fitted throughout your home."
