The Westpac rescue helicopter has flown in to the Akatarawa Valley in Upper Hutt to rescue a man in his 40s who crashed off his motorbike.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman said a person who called emergency services about 4.30pm had walked 40 minutes out of the bush to raise the alarm.

A central communications police spokesman said the injured man was travelling on a four-wheel-drive access track near Karapoti when the incident happened.
