A 13-year-old cyclist who was flown to hospital with head injuries was not wearing a helmet, police say.
After being struck by a car in Carterton yesterday afternoon, the boy was taken to Wellington Hospital in a Life Flight Westpac rescue helicopter with head and leg injuries described as "serious" .
The cyclist was hit in Park Rd in Carterton about 1pm and was initially cared for by St John Ambulance paramedics at the scene, police said.
The Wellington-based serious crash unit was investigating the cause of the crash but neither speed nor alcohol was thought to be a factor, Wairarapa police senior sergeant Jymahl Glassey said.
"He was with another boy on a bike [and] drifted into the path of the vehicle."
Glassey said he had been told the boy was in a lot better condition than yesterday and his injuries were not life-threatening.
"But it's caused him some grief by not wearing a helmet and [a helmet] would have definitely taken some of the force of the impact."
