Heavy rain and gale force winds are expected to bash parts of the country tomorrow.

MetService forecast the heaviest of the rain for western parts of the South Island, part of the Canterbury headwaters, the northwest Nelson Ranges, and for the Bay of Plenty east of Opotiki, and Gisborne north of Ruatoria.

The rain was being brought by a strong moist northerly flow ahead of a low expected to cross the country tomorrow.

Northerly winds were expected to rise to gale about exposed parts of the South Island, as well as Wellington. They could become severe - above 89kmh -  for a while about exposed parts of Fiordland, Westland, Otago, the Canterbury high country, Marlborough and Wellington.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
