Police suspect one of the vehicles in a head-on crash on State Highway One north of Dunedin at lunchtime today was on the wrong side of the road.

Sergeant Matt Scoles said the crash, at 12.50pm about 50m from Butler's bridge on the winding climb out of the city, involved a tourist van with six occupants and a station wagon driven by a local.

"Investigations are continuing but indications are one of the vehicles crossed the centre line," Sgt Scoles said.

A member of the tourist vehicle had to be cut from the wreckage and was taken to Dunedin Hospital with moderate to serious injuries.

No one else was hurt in the crash.

Sgt Scoles said the vehicles were travelling in opposite directions, however, he was unsure which vehicle was north-bound and which was heading south.
