A fully laden truck caught fire about midnight last night, closing State Highway 1 north of Wellington and requiring six fire engines to attend the scene.
The B-train truck was fully engulfed in flames by the time the fire brigade arrived, a spokesman said.
Due to the nature of the area, where there was a lack of water, six fire engines were sent to the scene.
The truck caught alight between the Wellington suburbs of Tawa and Johnsonville.
The truck's driver made it out of the cab before the it fully caught alight, so was not injured.
The cause of the fire was not known.
State Highway 1 between Tawa and Johnsonville was closed for several hours, but had since reopened.
