Man rescued after night in ranges
A 65-year-old man was rescued by Hawke's Bay police and search and rescue volunteers this morning after failing to return from a short walk in the Kaweka Ranges yesterday.
Napier detective Wayne Steed said the man had set out on a two-hour walk off the Taihape Road without a map and police had been alerted when he did not return last evening.
Steed said a team of about 20, including police officers and volunteers, searched the area from midnight. The man was located around 7.30am this morning.
"He'd come off the track and had become disorientated. He did everything right by staying put and spending the night where he was instead of wandering around," Steed said.
The man was unharmed and "had a new respect for the New Zealand outdoors" Steed said.
"It's a reminder to everyone that even on short walks things can go wrong and you should always carry a map."
