Two men are in hospital with serious injuries after separate assaults in Auckland early this morning.
One of the men, believed to be in his mid-30s, sustained serious head injuries during a brawl in South Auckland shortly after 4am.
Emergency services were called to Great South Rd by the Papatoetoe Clubrooms Bar and found the man unconscious among a large group of people. He was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
A police communications spokesman said a group of people had been fighting on the street but no one had yet been arrested as a result of the incident.
Police said that an hour earlier a 25-year-old man was assaulted in Cassette 9 - a bar on Vulcan Lane in Central Auckland. The victim was earlier incorrectly reported to be a woman.
A 22 year-old labourer from Napier had been arrested and will appear in the Auckland District Court today charged with injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton said the injured man was taken to Auckland Hospital in a serious condition and had not yet been spoken to by police.
"Witnesses to the dance-floor incident were able to alert the bar manager, and staff followed a man who left the bar for a short time so were able to provide valuable information to us," he said.
"Once again, as if any further proof was needed, this event shows nothing good happens in the city after 3am."
