A large timber mill fire in Northland has been brought under control by firefighters but is still smouldering.
Emergency services were called to the mill at Arapohue, south of Dargaville, about 2pm yesterday.
Jaron Phillips, shift manager northern communications centre, said the fire started in a pile of sawdust which was about 40m by 30m in size and six metres high.
"The fire has then spread into stacks of timber," he said.
"Loaders and diggers were used to turn over the sawdust and put the fire out."
Police were also called to the scene as the fire had spread and caused a smoking hazard across State Highway 16.
The Kaipara District Council will keep an eye on the smouldering mill to ensure the fire does not reignite.
