A two-car crash has closed the Desert Road through the central North Island.
Police said two cars collided at 1.30pm and two occupants trapped in one vehicle were trapped had to be cut free.
One person from the second vehicle was being flown from the scene north of Waiouru and the road closure was to allow the helicopter to land, police said. Police would then try to open one lane.
Initial reports indicate that two people received serious injuries.
Serious crash investigators are on the way to the scene.
The barriers at each end of the Desert Road have been shut.
