A 53-year-old woman has drowned at a Bay of Plenty beach while trying to rescue her partner.
Police said a 45-year-old Rotorua man got into trouble in a rip while swimming at Pukehina Beach, near Te Puke.
His partner swam to help but got into difficulties herself, police said.
"Emergencies services responded and a rescue operation was initiated with a rescue swimmer, a jet ski and other staff."
The woman was dragged from the surf but was unresponsive.
"Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful. The male was able to be rescued," police said.
