A 66-year-old Dutch woman was airlifted out of Tongariro National Park today after breaking her leg.
The Taupo-based Greenlea Rescue Helicopter was called around 12.30pm to airlift the woman from the Whakapapaiti Hut Trail.
She had slipped and broken her leg while walking along a ridgeline.
Low cloud made it hard for the helicopter to reach her and her companions could not carry her out because of steep terrain in the area.
A brief break in the cloud enabled the helicopter to land and treat her. She was airlifted to hospital in Rotorua. The weather deteriorated soon after.
The track forms part of a loop outside Whakapapa Village.
