Hunter dies in Hawke's Bay

A 56-year-old Napier man died while hunting near the headwaters of the Ngaruroro River in Hawke's Bay last night.

Emergency services were alerted when a personnel locater beacon was set off by a hunter in the Longfellow area near the McIndoe Flats just before 7pm.

A helicopter sent to the area found the hunter who had died and his companion, said Senior Sergeant Ross Smith.

It is believed the hunter may have either fallen or suffered a heart attack and police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Police will release his name once next of kin have been advised.
