Police are to talk to the driver of a vehicle who fled the scene of a fatal head-on crash south of Auckland this morning.
The driver left the crash on Chapel Rd, Flat Bush before police got there, and was reported by witnesses to have been picked up in another vehicle, police said.
The two cars involved crashed head-on about 4.15am. A 23-year-old man from Shamrock Park in South Auckland was confirmed dead at the scene.
Both vehicles involved were extensively damaged, with one ending up on its roof.
Police said they had located the other man later in the morning and had accompanied him to hospital to assess his injuries from the collision. He will be interviewed and a decision will be made if charges will be laid.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident and it is not yet known if alcohol or speed is a factor in the crash.
The name of the dead man will not be released until his next of kin have been notified.
