The man killed in a South Auckland car crash early yesterday has been named as Luke Samuel MacKenzie, 23, of Shamrock Park.
Police believe two cars collided head-on in Chapel Rd, Flat Bush, at 4.15am.
While MacKenzie was confirmed dead at the scene, witnesses reported that the driver of the other car was picked up in another vehicle.
Both cars involved were extensively damaged, with one ending up on its roof.
Police located the other man later that morning and took him to hospital to assess the injuries from the collision.
He is still in hospital, but it is understood his injuries are not serious.
Police said it would likely be a couple of weeks before a decision was made on whether charges would be laid.
The serious crash unit investigated the incident and it was not yet clear whether alcohol or speed were factors.
