Firefighters tonight battled a large fire at a building containing chemicals in the Bay of Plenty.

The fire started about 5.30pm on the corner of Totara Street and Hewletts Road in Mount Maunganui, a northern fire service communications spokesman said.

Nine fire engines were at the scene to fight to fully extinguish the fire, the spokesman said.

A level three decontamination site had been set up, which was used as a precaution in case a person received any contamination from the chemicals, the spokesman said.

A police spokesperson said there had been smoke billowing into the air and had asked businesses on Hewlett Road to close until it could be ascertained whether or not there were any dangerous chemicals within the smoke.

At this stage it would appear that a faulty valve has let gas escape and this was what had caught fire, the spokesperson said.

No injuries had been reported.
