Police have recovered the body of a man from a South Island beach this afternoon.
The body was discovered at the high tide mark near the mouth of the Kahurangi River, in the northernmost region of the West Coast, by two trampers walking along the beach.
Items believed to belong to the man, who was wearing a wetsuit, were also located.
Police said the body had been taken to Greymouth and they were attempting to identify the man and establish his cause of death.
Formal identification was expected to take some time.
