A Christchurch man who went missing nearly three weeks ago has been found after apparently walking almost 200 kilometres.

Police said Joseph Walter Woods, 40, was found "safe and well" just south of Makikihi, South Canterbury, yesterday.

A member of of public saw him walking along SH1, near SH82, and phoned police.

"It is believed he had walked from Christchurch to South Canterbury," Detective Wayne Boyd said.

Woods went missing from his residential address in Hoon Hay on February 13. Police had expressed concerns for his wellbeing as he was on medication.

Family members had searched the Selwyn District after Woods was spotted in Dunsandel, but found no sign of him.

Boyd said Woods' family was relieved he was safe and well.

"He has now been referred to health authorities," he said.

Police were grateful for the assistance of the media and members of public who came forward with information and sightings, Boyd said.
