The pilot of a micro-light aircraft has walked away from a crash in a paddock in eastern Southland.

Emergency services were called to the crash at 3.21pm this afternoon when a member of public saw a plume of smoke along Waipahi Highway between Pukerau and Gore.

Police said the micro-light pilot had to perform a forced landing which resulted in the crash.

Emergency services were at the scene when The Southland Times arrived at 3.50pm. The sole occupant was out of the aircraft with minor injuries and being treated by ambulance at the scene. The Civil Aviation Authority has been advised and will be investigating.
