Loud bangs which sparked a police cordon around a Porirua house this morning were gunshots, police say.

The incident occurred at 5.14am in Westmeath St, Cannons Creek.

"Residents reported hearing several loud bangs," a police statement said.

"An initial investigation indicates that a number of shots were fired at an address in the street.

A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he heard "three to four gunshots", followed by a man swearing, then silence.

Afterwards, he saw a patched gang member at the scene.

About a dozen police, some armed, arrived at the address but the neighbour said he saw no ambulance.

Police took away two men but it was not clear if they had been arrested or charged.

Police were earlier seen removing child car seats from a vehicle.

Police said an investigation was underway and people with information were asked to call 04 238 1420. Information would be treated as confidential.
