Hitchhiker dies after being hit by truck
A 27-year-old man has died after being hit by a truck on State Highway 3 near Turakina.
The man was believed to be hitchhiking to Whanganui when he was hit by a truck and trailer unit shortly after 10pm last night near the Whanganui Rd intersection in the Turakina township in Rangitikei.
The truck driver was uninjured and together with other witnesses attempted to give first aid to the man, but he died a short time later.
Police communications spokeswoman Sara Stavropoulos said police were in the process of speaking to the driver and witnesses, but early indications were that he had stepped out into the path of the truck.
His name will not be released until formal identification has taken place and his next of kin informed.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Constable Craig Jackson at Whanganui CIB on 06 349 0600, or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
