Two people have been seriously injured after a car and a freight train collided at a crossing near Auckland.
The incident happened at a lights-only rail crossing at the intersection of Hunter and Sedgebrook roads, Patumahoe, about 8.40pm.
The two people in the car were airlifted to Middlemore Hospital with serious injuries, a police spokesperson said.
The rail track and intersection would be closed while the serious crash unit investigate the cause of the crash. The train driver and witnesses were being helped by victim support personnel.
Diversions are in place.
