Armed police surrounded a Wellington pub this afternoon after reports a man was inside brandishing a gun.
Police were in telephone contact with a staff member of The Mariner Tavern in Titahi, who quietly got most patrons to leave before the man came outside and turned himself in to police, police central communications acting Inspector Bruce Mackay said.
The man turned out to be carrying a BB gun, and had popped off a few rounds inside the pub before coming outside. Police aid there is no indication that he had threatened or presented the gun at anyone at any stage.
Police had received the first reports of the man carrying the gun from a runner who had seen him nursing it in his lap on a bench by the beach.
A second person had called police after seeing him with it at the pub, on Whitehouse Rd.
Carrying a BB gun around in an urban area was extremely stupid, he added.
A police spokesperson added the incident was "a prime example of an unnecessary circumstance where someone with a fake but highly authentic looking gun has created a situation which has required an armed police response.
"Had this person not co-operated with police instructions but instead presented that gun in any manner towards them or other persons the response may have been drastically different, and the outcome potentially tragic."
