A freight train derailed after hitting a cow on the Wairarapa train line this morning.
KiwiRail this morning suspended all services on the line, which goes to Wellington, but managed to clear the line and a service left Masterton at 7.10am.
However, because the line was closed for about two hours this morning there was a shortage of trains at the Masterton end of the line.
Trains on the Wairarapa line were expected to return to schedule, starting with the 10.25am train from Masterton to Wellington, KiwiRail said.
KiwiRail warned of delays and would continue to operate a limited bus service to Hutt Valley, stopping only Masterton and Featherston.
It asked people who had other forms of transport to use those.
KiwiRail spokeswoman Jenni Austin said the northbound train hit a cow just south of Masterton shortly after 5am today.
That caused a set of wheels on one of the wagons to derail.
The cow was killed, but no people were injured.
It was thought the freight train was carrying no load.
