A pregnant woman, due to give birth in a fortnight, is in a serious condition in hospital after the car she was in crashed on a sharp bend then caught fire.
Senior Constable John Flack of Waipukurau said the 20-year-old woman, who suffered chest and pelvic injuries, was flown to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital in the Lowe Corporation rescue helicopter.
She was travelling as a passenger in the car with two men, who were in a stable condition in hospital tonight.
The Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter airlifted the woman from the accident scene 20km southeast of Waipukurau.
The men were transported by ambulance and were in a stable condition last night.
All three were wearing seatbelts but escaped before the fire took hold.
