A pregnant woman has lost her unborn baby after a fiery car crash in Hawke's Bay.

The woman, 20, who was due to give birth in a fortnight, was in a car that crashed then caught fire on a sharp bend 20 kilometres southeast of Waipukurau yesterday afternoon.

She was flown to Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital with chest and pelvic injuries.

Hawke's Bay Hospital spokeswoman Anna Kirk this morning confirmed the baby died last night, while the mother was this morning in a serious condition in the hospital's high dependency unit.

Senior Constable John Flack of Waipukurau said the woman was a passenger in the car with two men, who were in a stable condition in hospital last night.

All three were wearing seatbelts and escaped before the fire took hold.
