A young girl was was impaled on a fence post in Mangakino this afternoon.

Taupo's Greenlea Rescue helicopter was called to the incident at a local marae about 12.30pm.

The 11-year-old, who is understood to have fallen onto the post while climbing a fence, was flown to Rotorua Hospital with minor injuries.

A Greenlea Rescue pilot, who declined to be named, said the girl had been lifted from the post when they arrived and was able to walk to the helicopter.

She was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital as a "precautionary measure", he said.
