A five-car crash on State Highway 2 into Wellington this morning is at almost exactly the same spot as an earlier car fire, which caused significant commuter delays.
The nose-to-tail crash happened on State Highway 2, southbound between Petone and Wellington, at about 9.45am today, police said.
A backlog of traffic from an earlier car fire had only just cleared.
The new accident was not blocking lanes and there were no reported injuries.
However, some delays could be expected. The backlog of traffic reached from Horokiwi to Petone.
About 7.30am today a car was reported on fire on the same stretch of road, near Horokiwi.
It brought traffic to a virtual stand during the morning peak, with the queue of traffic reaching north to the Melling intersection.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
Emergency services were already nearby when the call came in about the car fire because a cyclist was earlier knocked off a bike on the highway, near the Petone on ramp.
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman said the cyclist was treated for moderate injuries.
There were no reported injuries from the car fire.
