Human bones have been discovered in a drain on Auckland's North Shore.

A lawn mowing contractor found the bones at around 12.30pm in a drain running alongside Totaravale Reserve.

The North Shore CIB and a pathologist have examined the scene. The pathologist confirmed the bones were human.

The remains would be removed tonight and examined fully tomorrow morning. It was not known how long the remains had been there, or whether they belonged to a man or woman.

The reserve runs alongside a motorway, and was cordoned off by police.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
