The woman was riding along the road when she apparently lost control and ended up rolling down a five metre bank.
People following the woman in a car saw the crash and called 111 then carried her back up to the roadside using a blanket.
Life Flight responded on the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic on board.
Life Flight crewman Dave Greenberg said the woman was in a ''fair amount of pain'' when the rescue crew arrived but she had not lost consciousness in the crash.
It was not known if she was wearing a helmet when she crashed just before 11am on Haurangi Road in Ruakokoputuna, south of Martinborough.
A road ambulance arrived at the same time as the helicopter.
The woman was suffering from possible back injuries, serious leg injuries as well as other cuts and bruises and has been airlifted to Wellington Hospital emergency department in a serious condition.
