A car has flipped into the sea next to State Highway 58 near Porirua, Wellington.

A 26-year-old driver was unharmed in the accident, which happened at 10.30pm at Bradeys Bay, Whitby, between Spinnaker Drive and James Cook Drive.

It was not clear which way the Paremata man was driving or why he crashed, a police spokesman said.

An ambulance had attended the scene but the man was not hospitalised. The tide was not high enough to endanger the driver when his car landed in Pauatahanui Inlet, the spokesman said.

Traffic was currently clear but one lane may be blocked when a tow truck arrives to remove the car at about 11pm, the spokesman said.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
