Child run over in driveway named
Police have named the 18-month-old girl killed in a West Auckland driveway this morning.
Waitakere Hospital contacted police at 12.37pm after relatives of Mila Tamihana had rushed her to the emergency department, after finding her seriously injured on a Massey driveway.
Her condition deteriorated and she was unable to be revived.
Inquiries are under way to establish how the child received her injuries, but details about the driver or vehicle involved were not yet known, police said.
"We're speaking with family members and neighbours, some of whom are understandably too distressed to speak to us just yet," Detective Sergeant Eugene Pickett said.
"It will take a few days before we have a clearer picture of exactly how this tragedy has occurred."
The Waitemata serious crash unit is also assisting in the scene examination.
Mila's family are being supported by a police iwi liaison officer and Victim Support.
According to research by the organisation SafeKids, five children a year are killed in driveway accidents and every two weeks a child is hospitalised with serious injuries from a vehicle on a private driveway in New Zealand.
A typical child injured in a driveway incident is a toddler, aged about two years old, of Maori or Pacific ethnicity, the group said in its 2011 research.
"The driver is usually a close family member. The devastating impact of these events upon families cannot be overstated," SafeKids said.
