Police are investigating the death of a four-month old baby boy in the Waikato region overnight.

Emergency services were called to a private residence in the town of Te Awamutu, south of Hamilton, about 9.15pm last night. The baby was found dead on arrival, police said.

The child's death has been referred to the Coroner, however police continue to investigate.

The circumstances surrounding the death were not being treated as suspicious at this stage, Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering of Hamilton police said.

Police were unable to give any detail this morning about how the baby died but said investigations continued.

"There are a number of inquiries that still need to be continued by police," van de Wetering said.
