A man in his 20s has been seriously injured in a hunting incident in the Bay of Plenty.

About 1.30pm a personal locator beacon was activated in a remote area of bush southeast of Opotiki after a man was believed to have been shot.

The Greenlea rescue helicopter was sent to the location of the signal with a paramedic on board and further information was received by phone that a man had been injured with a firearm while hunting, police said. He was with two other hunters, all from the Hamilton area, at the time.

He was flown to Rotorua Hospital in a critical condition.

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident has begun.
